It’s a controversial claim to say the least, but some believe that Trump is showing some classic signs of mental illness.
President Donald Trump’s behavior both during the campaign and in the first few weeks of his presidency have certainly been unorthodox, but some are claiming it’s a little bit beyond the pale, and he may in fact be mentally ill. Many dispute this, arguing that trying to armchair diagnose the president does a disservice to serious psychology and is more of an attempt to disparage an unpopular president than a serious claim.
However, others argue that Trump may need a psychiatrist, and one California democrat has even suggested legislation that would require a White House psychiatrists. And three prominent psychiatry professors submitted a letter that was published by the Huffington Post that suggests Trump’s “grandiosity, impulsivity, hypersensitivity to slights or criticism, and an apparent inability to distinguish between fantasy and reality” indicates he may not be all there.
Another psychologist wrote in the U.S. News and World Report that Trump appeared to have malignant narcissism. And yet another letter to the editor in the New York Times argues that “We believe that the grave emotional instability indicated by Mr. Trump’s speech and actions makes him incapable of serving safely as president.”
