Dog-Loving Women Create Community While Improving Pets\' Health

Ruth Villasenor and Diane Pfile, with Bandit and Angel

In 2004, Diane Pfile and Ruth Villasenor took a risk. They decided to create a neighborhood health pet food store in Oakland's up-and-coming Dimond district. There was no independent pet store at which to shop (just a large chain store in a nearby upscale neighborhood) and further, they had learned a lot about nutrition and alternative therapies for animals when one of their dogs, Angel, was diagnosed with cancer. So they took action and created Paws & Claws, a holistic pet product store and colorful bathhouse.

Opening Paws & Claws brought several opportunities. Pfile and Villasenor could use their store to educate people about the value of shopping at small businesses, which not only makes the customer feel more recognized and appreciated, but contributes to community health; they could help improve animals' quality of life through better nutrition; and they could make a difference for the planet by encouraging earth-friendly products.

From the beginning, Paws & Claws has stocked only products the owners feel good about, like organic pet foods, raw foods for dogs and cats, natural supplements and shampoos, ecologically friendly litters, and chemical-free flea remedies.

Since opening, they have been active in educating consumers by hosting experts who have given lectures on such topics as nutrition, alternative treatments, choosing ecologically friendly products, and animal safety. They continually fundraise for various local animal rescue groups, and helped raise over $600 for the animals of Katrina.

With its emphasis on neighborhood and community, Paws & Claws has become more than a pet food store. "A lot of people call it a community center," explains Villasenor. As for the dog who was diagnosed with cancer three years ago, Angel is a living example of the benefits of combining Eastern and Western veterinary care and sound nutrition. "She will be happy to greet you and your dog when you come to the store," says Villasenor with a smile.
